How the Technical General class works

Technical General is wide: a little of everything from the lift equation to the TCAS. The way through it is to learn each system as a chain of cause and effect, and to know the handful of formulas that carry the numerical questions.

Classes use the diagrams and simulators on the student website so you can see a gyro, an altimeter or a pitot-static error behave before you try to remember it.

Taught by Nikunj Kariya as part of the full TrueHeading course (₹50,000 for all five subjects, down from ₹80,000), with the student website for practice.

Key ideas to know

  • LiftL = ½ρV²S·CL. Stall speed rises with weight and with the square root of load factor.
  • TurnsLoad factor n = 1 ÷ cos(bank). At 60° bank n = 2 and the stall speed rises by 41 %.
  • MachMach = TAS ÷ LSS, and LSS = 38.95 √T (T in kelvin). Total air temperature = SAT × (1 + 0.2M²).
  • Pitot-staticA blocked pitot with the drain open reads zero. A blocked static source freezes the altimeter and VSI.
  • GyrosApparent drift = 15 × sin(latitude) degrees per hour. Rate 1 turn is 3° per second.
  • TCASA traffic advisory (TA) is "TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC". A resolution advisory (RA) gives a vertical manoeuvre which you follow even against ATC.

Common mistakes

  • Reading a pitot-static failure in the wrong direction (over-read or under-read).
  • Forgetting to convert temperature to kelvin in Mach and TAT calculations.
  • Mixing up the primary and secondary effects of controls and stability.
  • Memorising instrument colour codes without understanding the speed they mark.

Technical General classes: common questions

What does the DGCA Technical General paper cover?

Aerodynamics and performance, flight controls and stability, airframe and structures, powerplant, propellers, aircraft systems, pitot-static instruments, altimeters, airspeed and Mach, gyroscopes, attitude and turn indicators, INS, IRS and FMS, EFIS, autoflight, flight director, EICAS and ECAM, engine instruments, fuel systems, the compass, warning and recording systems, and TCAS.

Are there simulators for Technical General?

Yes. The student website has simulators for the attitude indicator and turn coordinator, the HSI, the altimeter and TCAS, so you can see the instruments respond.

How can I practise Technical General questions?

Students get 1,226 Technical General questions with explanations, topic filters, mock tests and flashcards with formulas and diagrams.
